Jan. 21: Ag Forecast

Purdue Ag alumni and friends are invited to this program, which is held in conjunction with the Ag Alumni Fish Fry. A panel discussion, "The Future of Biotechnology: Consumer Acceptance, Global Policy and New Agronomic Crops," will feature four experts from academia and industry. The session will begin at 9:15 a.m. in Fowler Hall at Stewart Center on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. It is free and open to the public. Jan. 21: Ag Alumni Fish Fry

The annual Ag Alumni Fish Fry is roaring into the new decade with the theme of "Racing Into the Millennium," a program based on the popular stock cars of NASCAR. The program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Purdue Armory and will include performances by Purdue Bands and the Purdue Musical Organizations. A special tribute is planned for Purdue President Steven C. Beering, who is scheduled to retire this year. The menu will once again feature breaded pork tenderloin. Tickets are $12 and must be purchased in advance through Cooperative Extension Service county offices or the Ag Alumni office. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. Jan. 24-26: Indiana Horticultural Congress

This program for industry newcomers, experienced growers and county Extension educators includes workshops for new apple and grape growers, a trade show, a silent auction, the annual Indiana Raw Products Recognition Luncheon, the Indiana Winegrowers Guild Symposium and the annual Horticulture Awards luncheon. Sessions focusing on fruit, vegetables, organic production and beekeeping also will be featured. The congress will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. Preregistration costs $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers, plus the cost of room and board. An additional $15 will be charged for on-site registration. Some workshops will require additional fees. Jan. 24-26: Indiana Winegrowers Symposium

Individuals interested in learning more about Indiana's wine and grape industry are welcome at this annual symposium offering education in enology, viticulture and marketing. Other symposium highlights include experimental wine tasting with Purdue research wines and an evening banquet paired with Indiana wines. The symposium will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. It begins at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 and concludes on Jan. 26. This event is held in conjunction with the Indiana Hort Congress, and registration is included in the Hort Congress package. Registration costs for only the winegrower's symposium are $30 for Indiana Winegrowers Guild members, $40 for nonmembers. Jan. 25-27: Environmental Summit Planning Meetings

The State Planning Committee for the Fourth Indiana Youth Environmental Summit is holding three regional planning and information meetings for individuals interested in serving on planning committees for the 2001 Indiana Youth Environmental Summits. The three summits planned for spring 2001 are geared toward students in grades 3-8. Middle and high-school students are the featured presenters, discussing their environmental projects and programs. The planning meetings will be from 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates:

Jan. 25 – Central Indiana, Fort Harrison State Park, Park Office, Post Road and 59th St. Indianapolis.

Jan. 26 – Northern Indiana, Marshall County Extension Office, Room 394, Marshall County Building, 112 West Jefferson St., Plymouth, Ind.

Jan. 27 – Southern Indiana, Washington County Extension Office, Courthouse Annex, 35 Public Square, Salem, Ind.

Jan. 29: Lambing School

Purdue's Department of Animal Sciences, the Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association offer this educational event for sheep producers. The program will familiarize producers with lambing procedures by covering late gestation, lactation and care of newborn lambs. Topics discussed will include nutrition, reproduction, health considerations, lambing barn obstetrics and necessary management practices. The school is designed with maximum "hands on" experience and informal question and discussion in mind. Cost is $35 per person. The fee includes noon meal, morning coffee and doughnuts and educational materials.
