Appointments and promotions

–  Kim Davis, associate director of investments in the Office of the Executive Vice President and Treasurer, has been promoted to director of investments. Davis has worked in the investment office since 1981 and has served as associate director since 1989. She succeeds Jim Benken, who retired Dec. 31 after 40 years of service to the university and was named director emeritus of investments.

Faculty and staff honors

–  Richard Gelzleichter, project coordinator in international programs in the School of Agriculture, was honored recently by Epsilon Sigma Phi, the national honorary extension fraternity. He received the North Central Regional award for Distinguished International Service. Among his efforts, Gelzleichter initiated a cooperative extension program in Poland, making 25 trips to the country to help extension staff at Krakow Agricultural University understand how extension works.

–  Janet Ayres, assistant extension director and program leader for leadership and community development, was honored recently by Epsilon Sigma Phi, the national honorary extension fraternity. She received the North Central Regional Distinguished Service Award. Ayres was recognized for initiating several programs in Indiana focused on helping rural communities.

–  Evelyn Blackwood, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, won the Ruth Benedict Prize for her co-edited anthology, "Female Desires: Same-sex Relations and Transgender Practices Across Cultures." The prize was presented by the Society of Gay and Lesbian Anthropologists at the American Anthropological Association meetings in Chicago.

Campus activities

–  Students who have demonstrated leadership ability should submit applications by March 3 for the 2000-2001 Class of 1937 Scholarships. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, full-time undergraduate students at the West Lafayette campus, have completed their freshman year and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 2 on a scale of 4. Applications are available at the Office of the Dean of Students in Schleman Hall, the Black Cultural Center at 1100 Third St., and the Purdue Student Government Office, Room G-6, Stewart Center.
