The tax man cometh

Most Americans will wait until the federal income tax deadline of April 15 to file their taxes, though employers are required to send their employees earning statements by Jan. 31. What can taxpayers do right now to prepare? Jack Hatcher, assistant professor of management at Purdue and certified public accountant, has some helpful tips you can pass on to your readers and listeners about the preparation and organization of their 1999 taxes. • Monday, Jan. 17.  "Affirming the Dream V: A Day of Service." Purdue faculty, staff and students pay tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.'s. birthday by volunteering in the morning at Greater Lafayette nonprofit agencies. • Tuesday, Jan. 18.  Golden Taps. 10 p.m. Spitzer Court, Cary Quadrangle. The Golden Taps ceremony gives the Purdue community an opportunity to formally honor and reflect on the lives of students who have died during the previous month. • Wednesday, Jan. 19.  The Rev. Walter Fauntroy, a leader in the civil rights movement, former U.S. representative for the District of Columbia, and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, will give a lecture in honor of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. • Friday, Jan. 21.  Ag Forecast. 9:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Consumer attitudes and world-trade concerns regarding new crops created with biotechnology will be discussed during the Ag Forecast panel session featuring four experts from academia and industry. • Friday, Jan. 21.  Ag Alumni Fish Fry. 11:30 a.m. Purdue Armory. The theme, "Racing Into the Millennium," is based on the popular NASCAR stock cars. In addition to the traditional irreverent fun, officials will display a NASCAR race car and NASCAR simulators in which state and local officials will race against each other. The event will also feature the inaugural launching of the Purdue Ag Alumni radio-controlled mini-blimp.
