Dec. 8: Agricultural Tax Workshop Purdue University, U.S. Internal Revenue Service and Indiana Department of Revenue are sponsoring this half-day agricultural tax workshop at the Jasper Holiday Inn. Purdue agricultural economist George Patrick will lead in-depth discussions of farm and agricultural tax problems such as marketing arrangements and tax treatment, soil and water conservation expenditures, and farm leases and tax treatment. Dec. 9: Wabash River Quality workshop This workshop at Purdue will give real-life solutions to water quality problems. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., the event will feature local examples of practices designed to protect and improve water quality. Several presentations will be held throughout the morning, and breakout sessions will be held in the afternoon. Areas of concern for water safety such as wetlands, agriculture, business and industry will be discussed. Topics will include the local issues of the Wildcat Creek Watershed and water treatment at Prophetstown State Park. The workshop will conclude at 4:30 p.m. Registration is limited and costs $15, including lunch. Dec. 12: farm management day for high-school students High-school students interested in farming in the future are invited to spend a day at Purdue to learn how a college education in farm management can help them succeed. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Krannert Building, followed by a preview of Purdue. Several ag economics instructors will speak on what is needed to become a successful farmer, why education will be a benefit, how much the farmer is paid and more. The event will conclude at 3:30 p.m. Registration is $5 per family and will be accepted until Dec. 12. Meals are extra, with an optional lunch at an ag fraternity for $4 per person. Parking is available in the Grant and Wood Street Parking Garage, a half block south of State Road 26. Dec. 15: Indiana bat workshop Several Indiana forestry and wildlife organizations are teaming up for a workshop in Bedford to inform individuals involved in woodland management of the Indiana Bat Recovery Plan. The workshop will focus on the management of woodlands under the Endangered Species Act and will teach about the biology, habitat requirements and behaviors of the Indiana bat. The program begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4:40 p.m. Guest speakers will discuss such topics as Indiana bat research, use of bat detectors, and effects of the Indiana bat on woodland management. The workshop will be at Stonehenge Lodge across from the Hoosier National Forest Office in Bedford. The deadline for registration is Dec. 11, and the cost is $45. Dec. 15-16: kentuckiana crop production seminar This seminar at the Radisson Hotel in Evansville is sponsored by Purdue University, University of Kentucky, the Indiana Plant Food and Chemicals Association, and the Kentucky Fertilizer Association. Speakers will cover the topics of soil and water management, soil fertility, crop diseases, and value-added crops. Crop producers who attend will be eligible for continuing education credits. Pre-seminar events will begin at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 15 and will conclude at 1 p.m. Seminar events will follow and conclude at 6 p.m. Dec. 16. The deadline for registration is Dec. 9. Fees are $20 for each pre-seminar subtopic attended and $55 for the main seminar. Discounted fees are available for those who attend both sessions.
