Representatives from Purdue and the University of Illinois will present information on insect control, fungicides, herbs and medicinal plants, and managing risk in vegetable farming. The program will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 6. Preregistration is encouraged. The $15 registration fee includes lunch. A check payable to the "NW Hort. Producers and veterinarians are teaming up with program sponsors such as the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, the Indiana Board of Animal Health, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service to raise high-quality cattle. Program cattle that are certified as IQ+ Beef are managed under practices that result in superior beef products. Cattle in the program are identified by a distinctive tag in the left ear. An upcoming sale that includes IQ+ Beef-certified cattle will be at the Boswell Livestock Commission Co. at noon Jan. 14. The program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Purdue Armory and will include performances by Purdue Bands and the Purdue Musical Organizations. A special tribute is planned for Purdue President Steven C. Beering, who is scheduled to retire in 2000. The menu will once again feature breaded pork tenderloin. Tickets are $12 and must be purchased in advance through Cooperative Extension Service county offices or the Ag Alumni office. Group discounts are available for parties of 10 or more. A panel discussion on the future of biotechnology and a science forecast are planned. The forum will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Fowler Hall of Stewart Center on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The congress includes workshops for new apple and grape growers, a trade show, a silent auction, the annual Indiana Raw Products Recognition Luncheon, the Indiana Winegrowers Guild Symposium and the annual Horticulture Awards luncheon. Sessions focusing on fruit, vegetables, organic production and beekeeping also will be featured. The congress will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. Preregistration costs $30 for members and $40 for nonmembers, plus the cost of room and board. An additional $15 will be charged for on-site registration. Some workshops will require additional fees. Other symposium highlights include experimental wine tasting with Purdue research wines and an evening banquet paired with Indiana wines. The symposium will be at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. It begins at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 and concludes on Jan. 26. This event is held in conjunction with the Indiana Hort Congress, and registration is included in the Hort Congress package. Registration costs for only the winegrower's symposium are $30 for Indiana Winegrowers Guild members, $40 for nonmembers.
