Theatre's 'The Gut Girls' to play on Milwaukee stage

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Theatre's production of "The Gut Girls" will complete against five other college productions in a regional theater festival Jan. 5-8 in Milwaukee.

The Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival has selected "The Gut Girls" for its Region III competition. The production is set to hit the stage of Milwaukee's historic Pabst Theatre at 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6.

"We feel honored to be included in this premiere college theater showcase, because although we have had individual actors compete previously in this event, it's the first time in decades that we have submitted an entry pitting one of our entire productions against others," said Russ Jones, Theatre Department chairman.

KC/ACTF is a national theater education program, which aims to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. KC/ACTF Region III is comprised of colleges and universities from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin. The organization's national panel will select four to six of the best and most diverse of these regional festival productions to be showcased at the national festival at the Kennedy Center this spring.

While the entire production will travel to Milwaukee, five students were recognized and will compete in individual competitions:

Kristina and Jason Tollefson, Huron, S.D., husband and wife as well as third-year master of fine arts candidates studying production design and technology, were nominated for individual Barbizon Awards for Theatrical Design Excellence. Kristina was nominated for costume design. She won the Region III costume design competition last year for her work on Purdue Theatre's production of "Private Lives." Jason was nominated for lighting design.

Three cast members were nominated for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. They will perform in Stiemke Theatre, home of the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, for the regional competition. Nominees are: Jennifer Fitzery, Tonawanda, N.Y., a second-year master of fine arts candidate in the Professional Actor Training Program; Anna Larson, West Lafayette, a senior theater major; and Heather Sanderson, Fremont, Ind., a senior theater and psychology major.

"The Gut Girls," directed by Kristine Holtvedt , associate professor of theater, was performed at Purdue Nov. 11-21 in the Experimental Theatre.
