December 3, 1999 Ag dean re-elected to head USDA advisory boardWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The dean of Purdue University's School of Agriculture, Victor Lechtenberg, has been re-elected as chairman of a U.S. Department of Agriculture advisory board and reappointed to the board for a second three-year term. The National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economics Advisory Board provides input to Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman on national research policy and priority issues in food, forestry and agriculture. "Issues likely to be soon on the board's agenda include reviewing our priorities with regard to issues such as agricultural genomics, environmental stewardship and food safety," Lechtenberg said. "We're also very concerned about communicating the importance of food, agriculture and natural resources to the well-being of this country. Research plays a vital role in these areas and must be adequately funded." Lechtenberg was first appointed to the group in 1996 when the board was created by Congress to replace three previous USDA boards. The NAREEE advisory board consists of 30 members including farmers and representatives of businesses, land-grant universities and government agencies. Lechtenberg has been annually elected chairman of the board since its creation.
