Dec. 7:  Value-Added Grain Seminar

Corn producers are invited to this seminar in Vanderburgh County on white and specialty corns. Experts will present information on topics such as high-oil corn management basics, nitrogen management of white corn, and stalk-boring insect concerns in specialty corn. A panel will discuss genetically modified grains. The seminar begins with coffee and doughnuts at 8:30 a.m. at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center. There is no cost to attend the seminar, preregistration is not required, and continuing education credits (CCH and CEU) will be offered. Dec. 8:  Bistate Farm Management Outlook

Experts from Purdue and the University of Illinois will discuss genetically modified organisms (GMOs), low markets and high rents during this program. The event will be at the Beef House, located between Covington and Danville at the junction of Interstate 74 and Indiana 63. Chris Hurt, Purdue ag economist, and Darrel Good, University of Illinois ag economist, will begin the program by looking at where markets are headed. Emerson Nafziger, an agronomist from the University of Illinois, will discuss GMOs and the factors to consider when making this winter's seed-buying decisions. Purdue ag economist Howard Doster will present "What's the Right Rent?" a discussion designed to help landlords and tenants alike determine the best rental arrangement for the upcoming year. Registration is $12, and lunch is included. Dec. 11:  Farm Management Day

High school students and their parents will have the chance to hear Purdue agricultural economics professors speak about farm management. The day is designed for families with a farming background. Five ag econ experts will discuss topics including "Can You Be a Successful Farmer?" "Will Education Pay?" "How Much Should a Son or Daughter Be Paid?" and "Marketing Magic." The event will be in Room G18 of the Krannert Building on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. It begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. Advance registration is not required. Dec. 17 And Jan. 14:  IQ+ Beef Sales

Indiana is launching the IQ+ Beef program, an effort designed to ensure safe, wholesome and palatable beef. Producers and veterinarians are teaming up with program sponsors such as the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, the Indiana Board of Animal Health, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service to raise high-quality cattle. Program cattle that are certified as IQ+ Beef are managed under practices that result in superior beef products. Cattle in the program are identified by a distinctive tag in the left ear. Upcoming sales that include IQ+ Beef-certified cattle are:

Jan. 6:  Illiana Commercial Vegetable Growers' School

This all-day program at Teibel's Restaurant in Schererville, Ind., is designed for commercial vegetable growers. Representatives from Purdue and the University of Illinois will present information on insect control, fungicides, herbs and medicinal plants, and managing risk in vegetable farming. The program will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Preregistration is encouraged. The $15 registration fee includes lunch. A check payable to the "NW Hort.
