Purdue police apprehend two in car break-ins

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police early Monday (11/22) arrested two teen-agers in connection with a series of thefts from unlocked vehicles on campus.

A staff member alerted police about 5:30 a.m. after seeing one of the two males entering vehicles in the McCutcheon Drive Parking Garage.

Detective Capt. Steven R. Dietrich said that when officers pulled into the garage and spotted the pair, one of them threw some compact discs and CD cases between two parked cars. During subsequent questioning, Dietrich said, the two admitted breaking into and removing items from at least 20 cars on and around campus.

Arrested and taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail was Kevin N. Cloyd, 18, of West Lafayette. His bond was set at $5,000. Cloyd's companion, a juvenile, was released to his parents pending a review of the case by county juvenile authorities. Neither is a Purdue student.

Theft is a Class D felony in Indiana, punishable by a jail term of one to three years and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Dietrich said a complete inventory of property taken from vehicles is still under way, but the value of recovered property could total several thousand dollars. Persons missing property from their vehicles are asked to contact Purdue police at (765) 494-8221.

Dietrich also urged motorists to lock their vehicles when unattended.
