White House nominates scientist to National Board

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – President Clinton on Monday (11/1) nominated Purdue University Professor Michael G. Rossmann to be a member of the National Science Board.

The board has dual responsibilities as a national science policy adviser to the president and the Congress, and as the governing body for the National Science Foundation.

Rossmann is best known for his pioneering work in modeling the structure of viruses. His role in structural biology is recognized globally, as are his many contributions in the life sciences. In 1985, his research group became the first to solve the structure of an animal virus when it mapped the three-dimensional structure of a common cold virus.

Rossmann has been on the faculty of the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue since 1964. In 1967, he was promoted to professor, and in 1977 he was named Hanley Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences. He received his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics and his master's degree in physics from the University of London, and his doctoral degree in chemistry from the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Rossmann is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the British Royal Society. This year he was one of 39 scientists named to the first class of Fellows of the Biophysical Society.

The 24 part-time members of the National Science Board are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. They are selected on the basis of their eminence in basic, medical or social sciences, engineering, agriculture, education, research management, or public affairs, to represent the views of scientific and engineering leaders in all areas of the nation.
