October 29, 1999 Greek organizations honor their best chaptersWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University's Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association have selected their outstanding chapters for 1999. Alpha Tau Omega was named the 1999 R.B. Stewart Award winner as the outstanding fraternity at Purdue, and Delta Upsilon was named runner-up. The outstanding sorority award, the Dean Barbara Elsbury Award, was given to Zeta Tau Alpha for the second year in a row. Pi Beta Phi received the runner-up distinction for the sororities. The awards are based on excellence in overall chapter operations, including academic performance, recruitment, campus leadership and community service efforts. The awards were presented during Greek Week, which included a blood drive, black-tie dinner dance and several philanthropic events that raised more than $4,000 for the United Way of Greater Lafayette. Nearly 5,000 students belong to one of the 60 Greek organizations that comprise membership in the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association of Purdue University.
