October 29, 1999 Celtic ensemble to play traditional, classical musicWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Ensemble Galilei, a musical group specializing in Celtic music, early music and new compositions, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center on the Purdue University campus. Presented by Purdue Convocations as a part of the Patron's Choice Series, Ensemble Galilei will be joined by theatrical clown Bob Berky for the afternoon performance. Founded in 1990, Ensemble Galilei has evolved into a six-woman group playing an assortment of authentic folk and other instruments including Celtic harp, fiddle, Scottish small pipes, oboe, recorders, penny-whistle, viola da gamba, percussion and bowed psaltery. Their repertoire ranges from instrumental arrangements of chant by Hildegard von Bingen, to Renaissance dance music, to chaconnes from the Baroque, to Irish jigs and reels, to music composed by the performers in the traditional style. Newly signed to the Telarc label, the group has recorded four compact discs. The first, "Music in the Great Hall," was a compilation of live performance tapes recorded at St. John's College in Annapolis, Md. Other recordings are "Ancient Noels," (1993), "Following the Moon" (1995), and "The Mystic and the Muse" (1997). Their first release on the Telarc label, "Lake Skybelow," is due out this fall. Excerpts of their concerts have been heard on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" 20 times since 1990, including Christmas Day 1997. In addition, Ensemble Galilei has performed two in-studio 30-minute concerts for the program. Ben Roe of "Performance Today" has said, "There's an ease about the way they play that seems to break down the barriers that normally exist between the audience and the performer. The repertoire is very engaging and the audience is clearly enthusiastic." On this particular performance, Ensemble Galilei is joined by friend and theatrical clown Bob Berky, who appeared as part of the Convocation's 1996-97 season. Berky is a master craftsman of mime and clowning and has performed as a solo artist at theaters, universities, and music and theater festivals throughout the world. His television appearances include specials on PBS, Canal Plus, Disney, MTV and Nickelodeon. He has taught at numerous universities and theaters including The Juilliard School, Brandeis University, The North Carolina School for the Arts and Smith College. He has worked extensively as a teaching and performing artist with the Lincoln Center Institute in New York. Tickets to the Nov. 14 concert are $16 for the public and $13 for Purdue students. Discounts are available to groups of 15 or more. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. CONTACT: Sue Stevens, Convocations publicist, (765) 494-5045, snsteven@purdue.edu
