Purdue field day zeros in on site-specific technologies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana farmers who are undecided about using precision agriculture technology can learn more about it at a field day Wednesday, Nov. 17, featuring Purdue University Extension specialists.

The one-day Precision Ag Workshop for Beginners, sponsored by Successful Farming magazine, will be at the Davis-Purdue Agricultural Center on State Road 1 in Randolph County. Lunch is included in the $25 cost of the workshop.

Producers who haven't yet decided if they should take the giant leap into space-based yield monitoring and global positioning systems (GPS) will get hands-on experience with yield monitors, yield maps and GPS mapping. Discussions will include:

• Yield monitor installation, calibration and use.

• Using GPS to navigate in fields.

• Interpreting yield map information.

• A talk on what using GPS is like, by a panel of farmers who are experienced with the technology.

For more information or to register for the event, call Paula Barbour at Successful Farming magazine at (515) 284-2852.
