Oct. 28: Ag-Econ Teacher Symposium High school economics, business and social studies teachers will spend a day on Purdue's campus learning about land use in Indiana. Topics include individual property rights, environmental concerns, economic growth, and values and expectations of farm and non-farm neighbors. The Purdue Land Use Team will demonstrate classroom exercises and provide free curriculum materials. The day begins at 9 a.m. in Stewart Center; lunch, refreshments and parking are complimentary. Tours of the Kampen Golf Course and Ross-Ade Stadium will provide close contact with turf research in action. Other classes and lab exercises will focus on healthy tree studies and wetland research. The symposium begins 9 a.m. at the William Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center on the West Lafayette campus. Beef producers and veterinarians are teaming up with program sponsors such as the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, the Indiana Board of Animal Health, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service to raise high-quality cattle. Program cattle that are certified IQ+ Beef are managed under practices that result in superior beef products. Cattle in the program are identified by a distinctive tag in the left ear. Upcoming sales that include IQ+ Beef-certified cattle are: Oct. 29: Logansport, Stony Pike Livestock Auction, noon. Nov. 24: Boswell, Boswell Livestock Commission Co., noon. Its purpose is to facilitate the delivery of state-of-the-art technology and information about managing competitive dairy herds. Michigan State, Ohio State, and Purdue universities are sponsoring the event, and representatives from each university and outside individuals will share their insights into dairy management. The conference will be at the Grand Wayne Center, 120 W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, Ind. It begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 10, with closing remarks at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Workshop topics include leadership, ethical decision-making, responsibility and respect. Purdue entomology Professor Tom Turpin will give the keynote address, "Leadership Isn't for Cowards." The congress starts at 8:15 a.m. and is being held at the Indiana Repertory Theatre, Embassy Suites Hotel and the Indiana Roof Ballroom. CONTACT: Carl Broady, 4-H program coordinator, (765) 494-8435; carl_broady@four-h.purdue.edu Nov. 28-Dec. 3: Agricultural Banking School This weeklong school on the Purdue campus for bankers will provide professionals with updated information on agricultural banking and an opportunity to network with their peers. The core curriculum includes agricultural financial statistics, credit analysis, decision making, loan structures and risk management. Topics such as the economic outlook, environmental audits and agribusiness management are also covered. Applications and tuition fees are due by Nov. 5. The fees are $725 for Indiana, Illinois, Ohio or Michigan Banking Association members or $960 for nonmembers. (The fees include room, board, and all instructional materials) Commuter rates are $575 for members and $810 for nonmembers. Banking school begins with registration from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28.
