Appointments and promotions

– Chris Sigurdson has been named interim department head of the Department of Agricultural Communication Services. He replaces David King, who stepped down to assume full-time duties as executive director of the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System or IHETS. Formerly the news coordinator in the department, Sigurdson's new appointment takes effect immediately. Assuming the role of news coordinator is Beth Forbes, a news specialist in the unit.

Faculty and staff honors

– Marlin U. Thomas, director of Purdue's Institute for Interdisciplinary Engineering Studies, was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for improving the effectiveness and efficiency of joint contingency engineer operations for the U.S. Atlantic Command. Thomas is a captain in the Civil Engineer Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, and is commander of the First Naval Construction Regiment, responsible for the training and readiness of four engineer units, consisting of more than 2,000 reserve Seabees. By applying industrial engineering and modern operations management methods, he improved the efficiencies in managing and scheduling work, matching skills and capabilities, and assignment of joint engineers.

– Jonathan Amy, professor emeritus of chemistry, has been named a Sagamore of the Wabash. Amy served in the chemistry department for 40 years. He established and directed the department instrumentation facility that now bears his name. The Sagamore of the Wabash is awarded by the governor to Hoosiers who have exhibited outstanding character and excellence in community service.

– W. Dale Compton, the Lillian M. Gilbreth Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering and interim head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, will be awarded the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Medal by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The medal, established in 1968, honors an individual who has had significant influence and responsibility for improving the productivity and efficiency of the manufacturing operation. It will be presented to Compton during the society's international meeting in November.

– Sidney M. Moon, associate professor of educational studies and director of the Gifted Education Resource Institute, has received an Award for Excellence in Research by the Mensa Education and Research Foundation. Moon was honored for her study "Family Therapy With Intellectually and Creatively Gifted Children," co-authored by A.S. Hall, which was published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.
