October 15, 1999 Former congressman to speakNOTE TO JOURNALISTS: Journalists may conduct brief interviews with Lee Hamilton during a 6:30 p.m. reception in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom preceding his 7 p.m. talk. WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton of Indiana will speak about the role of higher education in fostering effective government during a talk Monday, Nov. 1, at Purdue University. The public is invited to this free event sponsored by the School of Agriculture. Hamilton's talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Hamilton, who served 34 years in the U.S. House of Representatives before leaving office earlier this year, is now director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. The center's goal is to educate citizens on how Congress operates and its role in our system of government. At the time of his retirement, Hamilton was the ranking Democratic member of the House Committee on International Relations. He also had served as chairman of several committees, including the Joint Economic Committee, the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
