October 15, 1999 Purdue astronaut to hold book signingWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Gene Cernan, the Purdue graduate who commanded the final Apollo moon landing, will sign copies of his new autobiography "The Last Man on the Moon" (St. Martin's Press) from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, in Room 118 of the Purdue Memorial Union. The Little Professor Book Store in West Lafayette will have copies of the book available for purchase at the event. Cernan, a native of suburban Chicago, graduated from Purdue in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and in 1970 received an honorary doctorate from the Schools of Engineering. In the midst of a successful career as a Navy pilot, he was tapped by NASA for training as an astronaut. He eventually flew on three space flights; Gemini 9, Apollo 10 and the last moon mission, Apollo 17. He is on campus for a reunion of 18 of Purdue's astronaut alumni to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the moon landing and to meet with friends and supporters of the university during its President's Council Annual Weekend, Oct. 22-23.
