October 15, 1999 Education efforts noted during national alcohol weekWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Indiana Attorney General Jeff Modisett will be among the people reviewing Purdue University's alcohol education efforts during National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, Oct. 17-24. Modisett, John C. Lawn, chairman of the Century Council, and Nancy Maylath, Purdue student wellness director, will review the year's education efforts and announce a new initiative to increase the educational opportunities for college students and to help prevent alcohol-related incidents on campus. They will speak to students and reporters at 10 a.m. Wednesday (10/20) at a news conference in the Anniversary Drawing Room (Room 304) of the Purdue Memorial Union. The Century Council is a national, nonprofit organization funded by America's leading distillers and dedicated to fighting drunken driving and underage drinking. The week's events begin on Sunday (10/17) with the Greek and cooperative houses participating in a sheet sign contest to promote alcohol awareness. On Monday and Tuesday (10/18-19) red ribbons will be distributed on campus in support of a substance-free lifestyle. Other activities during the week include a vision goggle demonstration to illustrate impairment from alcohol or other drugs from 11:20 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday on the Memorial Mall. A Campus Alcohol Issues Forum will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Room B44, Knoy Hall. The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council will sponsor a mock car crash at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday (10/20) on the Memorial Mall. The week will come to a close at 8 a.m. Sunday (10/24) at Wiley Hall with the Jay Severson Memorial Walk/Run to raise money for alcohol and other drug education programs. In addition to the activities planned on campus, the Student Wellness Office will offer a variety of programs to residence halls, other housing units and classes around campus. These programs address issues such as alcohol poisoning, drunken driving and sexual assault.
