Oct. 19-21: Cooperative Extension Service Annual Conference

Extension educators from Indiana's 92 counties and on-campus specialists once again will gather in Stewart Center on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. In addition to attending the annual awards banquet, Extension personnel will be trained in farm crisis response, environmental stewardship and youth and family concerns, all of which are issues earlier identified as the Extension Service's "plan of work." Oct. 23: Indiana State Beekeepers' Association Fall Meeting

The Indiana Beekeepers fall meeting at Purdue will cover association business and topics of interest to beekeepers, plus the crowning of the Indiana State Honey Queen. Purdue honey bee specialist Greg Hunt will speak about bee intelligence. Marion Ellis, an apiculture specialist from the University of Nebraska, will discuss varroa mites, North America's most prevalent bee parasite. Oct. 28: Ag-Econ Teacher Symposium

High school economics, business and social studies teachers will spend a day on campus learning about land use in Indiana. Topics include individual property rights, environmental concerns, economic growth, and values and expectations of farm and non-farm neighbors. The Purdue Land Use Team will demonstrate classroom exercises and provide free curriculum materials. The day begins at 9 a.m. in Stewart Center; lunch, refreshments and parking are complimentary. Oct. 28-29: Science In Agriculture Symposium

High school science teachers will have the chance to participate in classes, tours and lab exercises focusing on environmental research. Tours of the Kampen Golf Course and Ross-Ade Stadium provide close contact with turf research in action. Other classes and lab exercises will focus on healthy tree studies and wetland research. The symposium begins 9 a.m. at the William Daniel Turfgrass Research and Diagnostic Center on the West Lafayette campus. Free lodging and meals are available by contacting the Office of Academic Programs in Agriculture. Registration deadline is Oct. 12. Oct. 29-Jan. 14: Iq+ Beef Sales

Indiana is launching the IQ+ Beef program, a nationwide effort designed to ensure safe, wholesome and palatable beef. Beef producers and veterinarians are teaming up with program sponsors such as the Indiana Beef Cattle Association, the Indiana Board of Animal Health, the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service to raise high-quality cattle. Program cattle that are certified IQ+ Beef are managed under practices that result in superior beef products. Cattle in the program are identified by a distinctive tag in the left ear.
