October 1, 1999 Purdue Convos gets new directorSource: Sue Stevens, Convocations publicist, WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. After a lengthy search, Purdue University has stayed close to home in the selection of a new director of the Department of Convocations and Lectures. Todd E. Wetzel, the department's director of development since 1997, will assume his new duties Oct. 1. He succeeds Lorna Myers, who retired in May after 20 years as director. Wetzel joined the Purdue Convocations staff after a seven-year stint at Valparaiso University, where he was director of the Center for the Arts. During that time he was a member of the design and construction committees for the university's $19.2 million multidisciplinary arts facility. At Purdue, he serves on the programming, conceptual design, and fund-raising committees for the Visual and Performing Arts Center project. Purdue Convocations has a full-time staff of eight professionals who book and promote five series of performing arts events the Lively Arts Package, Loeb Music Collection, Jazz Set, Discovery Concerts and Patron's Choice events. A typical season includes about 30 varied performances that range from Broadway shows to ballet, from symphony orchestra concerts to country music artists. The department also organizes the Distinguished Lecture Series, which has brought to campus speakers such as Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, ex-President Jimmy Carter, and Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, author and historian David Halberstam.
