October 1, 1999 Diversity dialogues to highlight commonaltiesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Diversity Dialogues, a series of conversations to promote understanding, starts at noon Monday (10/4), in Room B2, Stone Hall. The series, co-sponsored by the Purdue Bahai Club and the Purdue Diversity Resource Office, will feature guided discussions between two people with a specific thing in common and a specific difference, said Alan Manifold, series coordinator who is systems implementation manager at Purdue Libraries. Speakers will talk about what it means to be who they are, and what impact their similarities and differences have on their lives. While the format will remain the same each month, the topics and the speakers will be very different, Manifold said. "Diversity is a big topic, much bigger than can be covered in an hour, once a month. But we hope to touch on a number of areas using the same general format. "The first program will highlight two women. Women in this society share lots of experiences to bind them together. But one speaker will be white and the other will be black. Blacks and whites in this society can have very different experiences, and we hope to have this come out in their discussion. Once the speakers have shared their experiences, I want to find out whether their gender helps to connect them, across their racial difference." Other dialogues scheduled are an Asian-American man and woman on Nov. 1, and a Jewish and a Christian New Yorker on Dec. 13. All sessions will be at noon in Room B2, Stone Hall. The series will continue during the spring semester. CONTACT: Manifold, (765) 494-2857
