Homecoming: Football, food, memories, BCC dedication

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Football, a building dedication, food and memories will all be part of Homecoming 1999 at Purdue University, Oct. 15-16.

Weekend activities revolve around the Saturday football game against Big Ten foe Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. A full schedule of alumni activities is available at the Homecoming Web site.

On Saturday, Oct. 16, Purdue President Steven Beering will dedicate the new Black Cultural Center, 1100 Third St., at a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. Assisting Beering in the dedication ceremonies will be Mamon Powers Jr., university trustee from Gary, Renee Thomas, BCC director, and Vivica Fairbanks-Henderson of Cincinnati, president of the Purdue Black Alumni Organization.

At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., students will conduct tours highlighting the facility's African-inspired architecture. The Purdue Black Alumni Organization will sponsor a tailgate party at the BCC at 1 p.m.

The BCC staff has scheduled several other events in conjunction with homecoming, beginning with a welcome reception at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15. Later that evening, students, visiting alumni and the public can enjoy an evening of entertainment at the BCC Coffee House. The BCC's four performing arts ensembles ‹ the Black Voices of Inspiration, Haraka Writers, Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players ‹ will perform "New Beginnings ­ An Evening of Celebration" at 8 p.m. in Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for the public at the door.

• A few tickets are still available for the 2:30 p.m. football game in Ross-Ade Stadium. Tickets are $28 for the public, $14 in South End Zone, at the Athletic Office or by phone at (800) 49-SPORT or (765) 494-3194. The Alumni Cafe at the corner of Intramural Drive and Stadium Avenue will begin serving sandwiches, snacks and drinks at 11:30 a.m. The "All-American" Marching Band will perform a pre-game concert at 1 p.m. at Slayter Center of Performing Arts. Pre-game activities at the stadium will include the introduction of the 25th anniversary football team, coaches, managers, cheerleaders, and homecoming queen. Halftime will include the crowning of the 1999 homecoming queen and king and a performance by the marching band.

Other special homecoming activities include:

• Members of the Class of 1999 will dedicate their class gift, a renovation of Pickett Park, at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16. Students raised nearly $6,000 to renovate the picnic area along the south side of Stadium Avenue, east of McCormick Road. The park was established in 1971 in memory of former Purdue student Dean Pickett.

• The residents and staff of Amelia Earhart Hall will celebrate the facility's 35th anniversary with a tailgate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Food and door prizes will be available for Earhart alumni and their guests. Contact Elizabeth Mahan, Earhart Hall manager, (765) 494-2410, for more information.

Tomahawk, a student honor and service fraternity, is planning a 50th anniversary reunion event Oct. 16. The program will start about 5 p.m., after the football game, at the tractor-pulling strip off Allison Road in West Lafayette.

Purdue Musical Organization's Oktoberfest Banquet and Purdue Alumni Association Homecoming Celebration will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Purdue Memorial Union's Great Hall. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms. Tickets are $25 per person, check or cash only. Entertainment and sporting events on campus during homecoming weekend include:

• "Camelot," the Broadway musical. 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets are $16, $25 and $33 for the public; $15 and $18 for Purdue students, at campus box offices or by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Presented by the Department of Convocations.

• Women's Volleyball vs. Penn State at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, and vs. Ohio State at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. Matches will be played at the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students.

• Mackey Magic at 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15. This free celebration of the beginning of the men's and women's basketball seasons will be in Mackey Arena.

• John Mellencamp concert. 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Elliott Hall of Music. Blues artist Susan Tedeschi will open for Mellencamp. Tickets (at $40) are sold out, but some may become available the week or day of the concert. Check with campus box offices or by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. • Jazz Band and American Music Review free concert. 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, in Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

• Women's soccer vs. Illinois 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Soccer Field at McCormick Road and Cherry Lane. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students.

• Fall Concert Band and Symphonic Band free concert. 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, in Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.
