DePaul professor highlights teaching lecture series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The keynote speaker for the 1999-2000 Focus on Teaching Lecture Series is Thomas A. Angelo, associate professor and founding director of the School for New Learning's Assessment Center at DePaul University. His address will be part of the Purdue Teaching Academy recognition program for new inductees on Monday, Sept. 27, in Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. The program begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Focus on Teaching lectures are dedicated to improving teaching and learning at Purdue. The series is sponsored by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and is free and open to the public.

Angelo's presentation is titled "Teaching as if Learning Matters Most: Guidelines From Research and Best Practice." His work has focused on applying research to improve teaching and learning, academic assessment, and faculty evaluation and development.

The lecture series also includes award-winning Purdue faculty members who will share their experiences and insights, plus offer creative approaches to teaching. Each presentation will pose a set of ideas or questions designed to stimulate discussion among participants.

These "Conversations About Teaching" will be at 3:30 p.m. in the West Faculty Lounge of the Purdue Memorial Union. The dates and presenters are:

• Wednesday, Sept. 22. James Jones, associate professor and associate head of the School of Mechanical Engineering, winner of the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Solberg (Mechanical Engineering) Teaching Award, and, most recently, the Murphy Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching.

• Tuesday, Oct. 26. Sandra Abell, professor of science education in the School of Education and winner of a 1999 Murphy Award, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Innovation in Teaching Award in 1995, and the Award for Outstanding Innovation in Helping Students Learn in 1991.

• Tuesday, Nov. 16. Joseph Palmer, a professor of English who was honored six times with the English department's Excellence in Teaching Award and also won the School of Liberal Arts Excellence in Teaching Award in 1998 and the Charles Murphy Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 1999.

• Wednesday, Jan. 26. Joan Jurich, associate professor of family studies.

• Wednesday, Feb. 23. Robert Herrick, the Robert A. Hoffer Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering Technology and assistant department head of electrical engineering technology.

• Tuesday, March 28. Robert Sovinski, associate professor of horticulture, winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award for the School of Agriculture in 1999 and an eight-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.
