Tickets for Mellencamp concert go on sale Sept. 21, 22WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Indiana native John Mellencamp will bring his Rural Electrification Tour to Elliott Hall of Music on the campus of Purdue University at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, for one show only. The Homecoming Weekend concert is presented by the Purdue Student Concert Committee in cooperation with JAM Productions of Chicago. Blues artist Susan Tedeschi will open for Mellencamp. All tickets are $40 and go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at campus box offices and TicketMaster outlets. Purdue students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to buy ahead of the public on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Students may sign up to be assigned a time to buy tickets via the Web site at http://www.ssinfo.purdue.edu beginning at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, and continuing through noon Friday, Sept. 17. This Web site can be accessed by any Purdue student from any computer with Internet access. Students should check under the category "student life" for "SCC concert ticket times." Faculty and staff may sign up in the lobby of Elliott Hall of Music from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. All requests for purchase times will be randomized and assigned times beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. These times will be posted at the Stewart Center and Elliott Hall box offices as well as on the ssinfo Web site by 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17. Students, faculty and staff should note that credit cards will not be accepted on Sept. 21 and that there is a limit of six tickets per person. Faculty or staff members who also are students should sign up as a student. Assigned times will be posted by the last six digits of the person's Social Security number for faculty/staff and by student ID number for students. "Access by Internet is new this year and we think it's going to make it easier for students to sign up for a concert ticket time," Student Concert Committee adviser Laura Clavio said. "With so many students living off campus, being limited to just university computers was difficult. Students will need to log in using the same username and password they do with the ssinfo system here at Purdue." It is recommended that new students check out the Web site and make sure they don't have any problems with their login before signup begins on Sept. 14. Mellencamp, one of the original founders of the Farm Aid concert, will again perform at this year's Farm Aid '99 benefit Sunday (9/12) in Bristow, Va. His final album for Mercury Records was released Aug. 17. "Rough Harvest" is a collection of some of Mellencamp's hits and other songs reworked in an acoustic format. Also included on the album are his cover of "Under the Boardwalk" and a live version of his hit cover of Van Morrison's "Wild Night." Mellencamp's Rural Electrification Tour presented by VH1 includes concerts in Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, Louisville and Peoria. Mellencamp also will appear on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Oct. 7. "This is a great opportunity for Purdue Student Concert Committee. With the changes in the rock concert scene and the popularity of big outdoor venues like Deer Creek, it has become increasingly difficult for this student organization to book the kind of acts that will have the most appeal to the student body," Clavio explained. "Although Mellencamp certainly has a wider appeal than just the college-aged crowd, it's great to be able to pull in a big name and present what we feel confident will be a very successful concert in every sense of the word."
