Indy business leader donates $1 million
for Krannert expansion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue graduate and pharmaceutical industry leader William E. Bindley of Indianapolis has pledged $1 million over four years to assist with the university's Krannert School of Management expansion project.

"Purdue has given me a lot, and I'm trying to give back," said Bindley, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Bindley Western Industries Inc., an $8 billion Fortune 500 health-care company with headquarters in Indianapolis. "Taking the Krannert program to new levels requires resources, and most of these resources will have to come from private, not state, funding."

The "Krannert at the Frontier" campaign, the largest privately funded project in Purdue's history, seeks to raise $55 million. Plans call for spending $30 million to build a new classroom and distance learning facility near the existing Krannert Building at the corner of State and Grant streets. The rest of the campaign funds will finance endowed professorships and scholarships, and a computer technology upgrade.

Bindley founded Bindley Western in 1968 as a wholesale distributor of pharmaceuticals, concentrating on a customer base of major retail drugstore chains. The company now distributes health-care products and services to customers in all 50 states and Europe.

Krannert Dean Richard A. Cosier said Bindley exemplifies the characteristics that distinguish Krannert graduates: "He has a true grasp of the power of technology, the entrepreneurial spirit that encourages him to seek new markets and new ways of operating, and the work ethic to make things happen. Bill is a great leader and an outstanding citizen of Indiana."

Bindley graduated from Purdue in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in industrial economics. In 1997, he received both an honorary Doctor of Management degree and Krannert's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Bindley is a member of the President's Advisory Council at Purdue and of the advisory boards of both the School of Pharmacy and the Krannert Graduate School of Management.
