September 10, 1999 JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and selected Purdue events during the next two weeks.
Engineers creating earthquake plan for Indiana roadsCivil engineers at Purdue are preparing a plan to train Indiana transportation workers how to quickly assess damage to bridges and highways in the event of a major earthquake. When a catastrophic quake strikes, it will likely be impossible to round up enough engineers to quickly determine which bridges and highways are safe. That problem can be solved by training state transportation workers in damage-assessment and by identifying the most critical bridges and roadways ahead of time. Purdue engineers will put together workshops and a training video. The training materials should be ready by the end of this year.
