McGinley to lead search for next Purdue presidentWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of Purdue University's Board of Trustees, will head the committee that will conduct a nationwide search for a successor to President Steven C. Beering.McGinley today (Thursday, 9/9) named a 14-member Presidential Search Committee that includes representatives from Purdue's faculty, student body, administration and alumni, as well as the Board of Trustees. Beering, who has been Purdue's president since 1983, has announced plans to relinquish the presidency on July 1, 2000. However, at the board's request, he will serve beyond that date if the new president is not ready to take office. "President Beering has given Purdue more than 17 years of exemplary leadership," McGinley said. "He has led a great university with distinction and has put a strong foundation in place for his successor. The trustees and I are very grateful for the service of Steve Beering and the contributions of his wife, Jane. "The hiring of a president is the most important duty of a university board of trustees, and I expect the process to engage the committee very intensely until the job is done. Steve Beering is part of a long tradition of outstanding presidential leadership at Purdue, and the trustees consider it their duty to continue that tradition." McGinley said the Presidential Search Committee will conduct a confidential national search, screen potential candidates and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees, which will select the president. The board has retained R. William Funk of the executive search firm Korn/Ferry International as a consultant in the search process.
