McGinley to lead search for next Purdue president

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- J. Timothy McGinley, chairman of Purdue University's Board of Trustees, will head the committee that will conduct a nationwide search for a successor to President Steven C. Beering.

McGinley today (Thursday, 9/9) named a 14-member Presidential Search Committee that includes representatives from Purdue's faculty, student body, administration and alumni, as well as the Board of Trustees. Beering, who has been Purdue's president since 1983, has announced plans to relinquish the presidency on July 1, 2000. However, at the board's request, he will serve beyond that date if the new president is not ready to take office.

"President Beering has given Purdue more than 17 years of exemplary leadership," McGinley said. "He has led a great university with distinction and has put a strong foundation in place for his successor. The trustees and I are very grateful for the service of Steve Beering and the contributions of his wife, Jane.

"The hiring of a president is the most important duty of a university board of trustees, and I expect the process to engage the committee very intensely until the job is done. Steve Beering is part of a long tradition of outstanding presidential leadership at Purdue, and the trustees consider it their duty to continue that tradition."

McGinley said the Presidential Search Committee will conduct a confidential national search, screen potential candidates and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees, which will select the president. The board has retained R. William Funk of the executive search firm Korn/Ferry International as a consultant in the search process.

In addition to McGinley, who lives in Indianapolis, the search committee members are:

  • Barbara H. Edmondson, trustee from Clayton.
  • D. William Moreau Jr., trustee from Indianapolis.
  • Mamon M. Powers Jr., trustee from Gary.
  • W. Wayne Townsend, trustee from Hartford City.
  • Emily R. Mobley, dean of libraries and the Esther Ellis Norton Distinguished Professor of Library Science.
  • Richard J. Schwartz, dean of the Schools of Engineering.
  • James W. Yackel, chancellor, Purdue Calumet.
  • George M. Bodner, professor of chemistry.
  • Sally A. Hastings, associate professor of history.
  • Stanley L. Hem, professor of industrial pharmacy and chairman of the University Senate.
  • Linda J. Mason, associate professor of entomology and vice chairwoman of the University Senate.
  • Thomas J. Carroll of Indianapolis, a 1964 graduate of the Purdue School of Management and president of the Purdue Alumni Association.
  • Busch Voigts III, a senior in the School of Technology and president of the Purdue Student Government.
