Appointments and promotions-- Kathy Matter, a 29-year reporter and columnist for the Lafayette Journal and Courier newspaper, has accepted the newly created position of public relations director for Purdue University Department of Bands. Matter began her journalism career at the Lafayette newspaper in 1970 as a summer intern. She initially was hired full-time as a photographer before joining the original staff of the Lifestyles section with the startup of the Sunday edition in 1976. She was instrumental in the creation and design of "TGIF," an arts and entertainment section that runs every Friday, and for the past 21 years Matter has written a weekly column -- Marquee -- about the arts. In 1997, she won the Indiana Governor's Arts Award for media. She also has won Gannett, Indiana Press Association and Hoosier State Press Association Awards. She received a Marquis de Lafayette Award for her work at the newspaper. She is a long-time volunteer for the local arts, designing and making numerous costumes for productions at Civic Theatre and Jefferson High School.
