Leave early for football game, avoid constructionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University, Greater Lafayette and Indiana State police advise motorists to give themselves plenty of time to arrive at Purdue's 1999 home season football opener against Notre Dame on Sept. 11 because of the extensive road construction under way in West Lafayette. The sold-out game has a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. "Everyone coming to the game should come early and avoid bottlenecks in the construction area," said Purdue Deputy Chief James E. Roush. "As both Purdue and Notre Dame fans make their way to Ross-Ade Stadium, we urge them to bypass downtown Lafayette and the West Lafayette Levee just over the Wabash River." A major construction project involving the realignment of the intersection of State Roads 26 and 43 (State Street and River Road) in the West Lafayette Levee area west of downtown began over the summer. It includes ramp work on the Harrison Bridge on the West Lafayette side as well as lane restrictions on the bridge and in the construction area. Motorists coming to West Lafayette are encouraged to scan Purdue's Travel Alert Web page for additional information. Purdue, West Lafayette, Lafayette, Tippecanoe County and Indiana State police departments are working cooperatively to handle traffic flow on all home football game days this fall. "There will be plenty of officers in place before and after the game," Roush said. "It's important to follow their directions, watch for barricades or temporary one-way traffic lanes, take your time and be patient." Fans coming to West Lafayette from the north on Interstate 65 should exit on U.S. 231 (Exit 193) to U.S. 52 to the stadium, Roush said. Those coming into Greater Lafayette via State Road 25 from Logansport should head west on U.S. 52 to Yeager Road and Northwestern Avenue to the stadium. Motorists using downtown Lafayette from points south should use the Harrison Bridge north of downtown to avoid the heart of the construction area. Also, Purdue season ticket parking-permit holders should be aware of some location changes and renamed lots because of construction of a new outdoor practice field near Mollenkopf Athletic Center and the growth of John Purdue Club memberships.
