Convos brings classical guitarist to campus Sept. 23WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The first of Purdue Convocations' popular Discovery Concerts will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in Fowler Hall with classical guitarist Jason Vieaux. These concerts feature up-and-coming classical artists and ensembles and are sponsored by the Friends of Convocations.Vieaux became the youngest first-prize winner in the history of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Competition in 1992 when he was 19. From there, he began an international performing and recording career. He made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra and since then has performed in San Francisco, Detroit, Boston, Hartford and New York. Now an acknowledged master of the guitar, Vieaux teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music. For his Sept. 23 recital at Fowler Hall in Stewart Center, Vieaux will play J.S. Bach's Sonata in G minor, BWV 1001 (arranged by Vieaux), Fernando Sor's Fanataisie Elegiaque, Op. 59, Jose Luis Merlin's Suite del Recuerdo, Manuel Maria Ponce's Sonata No. 3, and Johann Kaspar Mertz's Fantaisie Hongroise, Op. 67, No. 1. In addition to appearing at Purdue, Vieaux will perform for and interact with students at Edgelea Elementary School in Lafayette the morning of Sept. 23 as part of Convocations' arts education programming. He also will perform with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night, Sept. 25, at the Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.
