Retirees honor Purdue's first lady with projectWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University retirees and the President's Advisory Council on Retirement surprised Jane Beering, wife of Purdue President Steven Beering, with a special presentation at their annual luncheon Aug. 23.In recognition of her impact on the university over the past 16 years, retirees are funding a renovation of the David Ross Memorial and Garden at the top of Slayter Hill. The area is one of Jane Beering's favorite spots on campus, said Betty M. Nelson, chairwoman of the council's Program Committee. The project will be ready in the spring. The garden seating area that will be named for Jane Beering will feature granite paving stones, benches, a tree and perennial flower beds. The location -- the highest point on the West Lafayette campus -- is the gravesite of Purdue alumnus, trustee and benefactor David Ross. CONTACT: Nelson, (765) 463-3144
