Appointments and promotions-- David Sigman, professor of visual and performing arts, has been named head of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. He had previously been interim head of the department.-- Tracy Sharpley-Whiting, associate professor in French, African-American studies and film studies, has been named director of the African-American Studies and Research Center. She was previously interim chairman in French. -- Howard Zelaznik, professor of kinesiology and psychological sciences, has been named associate dean of the School of Liberal Arts. He has been chairman of the Purdue Committee on the Use of Human Research Subjects and director of the Motor Behavior and Control Laboratory. -- Robert Mate has been promoted to assistant dean of students. He has spent the last four years as a counselor in the Office of the Dean of Students and two years before that as a graduate assistant. He hold bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue. -- Tyree Harris has been appointed captain of the Patrol Division of the Purdue Police Department, effective Sept. 1, succeeding Linda J. Stump, who became chief on July 1. Harris, a detective sergeant since 1997, additionally has supervised and coordinated the Purdue Student Security Patrol and its Security Escort Service. Campus activities-- A callout for "Weigh to Go," a seven-week weight control program for students, will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, in the cafeteria of the Student Health Center. The series focuses on healthy eating and exercise as part of a comprehensive weight-loss plan. Registration is $30.
