Purdue engineer, Turkish native, surveys quake zone

Mete Sozen, a Purdue structural engineer and an expert in earthquake-resistant structures, recently returned from his native Turkey, where he surveyed the damage caused by the powerful Aug. 17 quake. Sozen is a member of a field-investigation team sent to the earthquake zone as part of a national program to reduce the severity of earthquake-related catastrophes. He has written a preliminary report, which is available online at the Internet site for the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute. Golden Taps to honor students who died last summer

Five Purdue students who died during the summer will be recognized during the first Golden Taps of the year at 10 p.m. Tuesday (8/31) in Spitzer Court, Cary Quadrangle. Drummers and bugle corps from the University Band will proceed to the center of a darkened Spitzer Court, where student memorial cards will have been placed. The bell of the Boilermaker Special will ring once for each student, and the corps will play "Taps." The students to be recognized are John D. Greenwalt, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts from Cheyenne, Wyo.; Matthew Meyerrose, a sophomore in the School of Technology from Newburgh, Ind.; Kathryn Pokorny, a freshman in the School of Science from Valparaiso, Ind.; John A. Tran, a student in the doctor of pharmacy program from Schererville, Ind.; and Tiffany S. Young, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts from Hillsboro, Ala.     Dedication of Boeing 737 aircraft. 10:45 a.m. Purdue Airport. Don Gentry, dean of the School of Technology, and Michael Kroes, head of the Department of Aviation Technology, will formally accept and dedicate the Boeing 737 passenger jet donated by United Airlines last spring. Fred Mohr from the airline's Indianapolis maintenance facility and Ron Utecht, vice president for line maintenance, will represent United at the brief ceremony.
