Swine Day gives producers something to squeal about

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Swine producers can get the latest information on production techniques, environmental regulations, and using market tools to minimize risk and maximize income at Purdue's annual Swine Day on Tuesday, Aug. 31.

The free event, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Purdue's Animal Science and Education Center at 5675 W. Tippecanoe County Road 600 N., will also give producers the opportunity to meet with industry sponsors from feed, seed stock and equipment companies.

This year's theme, "Hitting Your Targets," is focused on fine-tuning operations. Industry panels consisting of bankers, packers, producers and Purdue Extension specialists will discuss how to maximize income, marketing techniques, production, nutrient management and potential costs, whether early weaning of sows affects reproduction targets, the use of specialty grains, and meat quality.

"We want to help swine producers target the components that make an operation better," said Brian Richert, swine management specialist. "We want to provide producers with information that will help them improve their production and guide them as to where the industry is going."

Other events include a discussion of the economic outlook for the swine industry presented by Chris Hurt, a Purdue professor of agricultural economics.

The Swine Research Update book also will be available for purchase during the event. The book, costing $3, will include swine research projects that were completed in the past years.

Swine Day is free, and no preregistration is required. A $5 meal ticket may be purchased upon arrival.
