Paint repair work wrapping up

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Greater Lafayette residents who think that their vehicle finishes were damaged by oversprayed paint on the Purdue University campus last month need to make repair arrangements this week.

Overspray Removal Specialists has cleaned up more than 300 privately owned vehicles, said Dan Machin, Purdue construction inspector. The company will begin cleaning university-owned vehicles later this week.

Overspray Removal Specialists has been inspecting and cleaning vehicles at a paved parking lot off Gates Road, behind the Purdue Police Department building. The company, based in Sarasota, Fla., has been in business for more than 30 years and uses a cleaning technology that removes overspray from various surfaces without damaging the original finish. All work is guaranteed.

Workers for the H. Sims Co. of Indianapolis were spraying light gray paint on greenhouses behind Lilly Hall of Life Sciences on July 22 when the wind apparently spread it to cars as far away as Smith Hall, Machin said. Parking had been restricted around the greenhouses during the painting, but the spray apparently blew over Lilly Hall of Life Sciences and some trees. Machin's own vehicle and several Purdue service vehicles were among those damaged.

A spokesman for the general contractor, J.R. Kelly Co. of Lafayette, said its insurance company will only guarantee work done by Overspray Removal Specialists, although it will pay for other companies to repair the overspray damage.
