Faculty and staff honors

-- CARe, the Communities Against Rape Initiative headed Mary Pilat, Purdue Extension specialist in 4-H youth, has won the 1999 Presidential Award from the Indiana Rural Health Association. CARe combines the expertise of educators, counselors and health professionals to create and distribute teaching materials aimed at preventing sexual assault and rape among people under age 24. Indiana Rural Health Association president Rob Clark noted that 72 of Indiana's 92 countries are considered rural, and CARe programs are vital to providing access to sexual assault support and preventive education in those communities.

-- Purdue police officer Carrie K. Costello has graduated from the basic training course at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. The 12-week course included 480 hours of training in a range of police-related subjects. Costello joined the Purdue Police Department in October 1998 after a five-year tenure as director of the Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program of the YWCA of Greater Lafayette. She holds a Purdue bachelor's degree in psychology and philosophy.
