Extension specialists to brief Lt Governor Aug 12WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Current crop conditions, market outlooks, and the status of Indiana's livestock producers will be some of the topics covered in a Purdue University briefing for Lt. Governor Joe Kernan at the Indiana State Fair Thursday, Aug. 12.Media are invited to attend the briefing, which will start at 9:15 a.m. at the Purdue exhibits in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion. Purdue Coooperative Extension Service Director Dave Petritz will preside over the briefing for Kernan, who also serves as Indiana's Commissioner of Agriculture. U. S. Department of Agriculture State Statistician Ralph Gann will be lead speaker.They will be joined by Purdue Extension agricultural economists and crop and livestock specialists, some of whom will attend via a computer link from the West Lafayette campus. Petritz said the hot topic will be U.S.D.A.'s August crop report and any implications for Indiana agriculture. "Grain supply is the key factor in the depressed crop prices, and agricultural markets and farmers the world over will be focused on the anticipated size of the U.S. crop," Petritz said. Other topics may include international crop stockpiles and outlook for expanded trade opportunities, he said. Kernan also may talk about Indiana's response to the current farm crisis of low crop prices.
