State Fair exhibits focus on information you can use

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue exhibits in the Our Land Pavilion at this year's State Fair will be overflowing with information you can use at home, said Dana Neary, Purdue's State Fair exhibit coordinator. The fair runs Aug. 11-22 at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

One exhibit by the Purdue School of Agriculture shows how to identify a gypsy moth and details the moth's relentless march through our state, Neary said. It describes what's being done to slow the moth's spread, and what you can do to help your trees and plants survive the pest when it arrives in your area.

In the Consumer and Family Science House, designed similar to an actual house, you can learn safe food-handling practices and how to control common allergens in your home. Another exhibit in the house describes Purdue Cooperative Extension Service programs that help parents raise healthy, productive children.

The Indiana Lawn Display shows the easy way to grow a nice green lawn for sunbathing, soccer games and family cookouts, Neary said. And if you're worried about a sick rose or an unhappy-looking apple tree, take your questions to the Plant Wellness Center, staffed by Purdue Master Gardeners and diagnosticians from the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Laboratory.

If you're just curious about your community, you can visit the Your Indiana Home Display, where you can pull up information on agriculture, population statistics and demographics for your part of the state.

The School of Veterinary Medicine again is sponsoring an exhibit where visitors can sit on benches outside a glass surgical suite and watch actual spay and neuter surgeries. The surgeries will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, and at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily Aug. 12-20. There also will be a different nonsurgical demonstration each day on topics ranging from basic first aid for pets to how to care for llamas, horses and reptiles. Those demonstrations will be at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 11 and 2 p.m. daily Aug. 12-21.

The Our Land Pavilion is in the west-central part of the fairgrounds between the dairy barn and the midway, next to the gazebo gift shop. The pavilion will be open each day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Other state fair events begin as early as 6 a.m. and run as late as 1 a.m. Among them are concerts by Brooks and Dunn, Alabama, Reba McEntire and Tim McGraw, midway rides, daily parades, 4-H exhibits, a hot air balloon race, and pony rides. Tickets are $5 at the gate or $4 in advance at Marsh Supermarkets, CVS/pharmacies, Indiana Farm Bureau offices, Union Federal Savings Banks, Signature Inn and the Indiana State Fair Box Office. Children ages 4 and under are free.

The State Fair Web site has more information about specific events.
