Repair site set for cars damaged by paint overspray

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University is expected to announce Thursday (7/29) a time line for repair work on more than 50 cars damaged by errant paint spray last week.

Dan Machin, a construction inspector for Purdue, will meet Thursday morning with representatives of Overspray Repair Specialists International to arrange the schedule for inspection and repairs. Owners then will be notified that they can take their cars in for inspection to a work area set up on a paved lot off Gates Road, behind the Purdue Police Department building. Once a vehicle has been inspected, the owner can schedule a date for repairs. All the repair work will also be done at that site.

Workers for the H. Sims Co. of Indianapolis were spraying light gray paint on the greenhouses near Lilly Hall of Life Sciences on July 22 when the wind apparently spread it to cars as far away as Smith Hall, Machin said. Parking had been restricted around the greenhouses during the painting, but the spray apparently blew over Lilly Hall and some trees.

Preliminary indications are that the paint can be removed with a rubbing compound and then the cars resealed with a protective coating. The repairs are expected to take one to four hours for each car, Machin said. The cost of the repairs is being borne by the contractor's insurance company.
