870 students eligible to receive degrees

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Approximately 870 Purdue University students will be eligible to receive degrees during commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, at Elliott Hall of Music.

About 430 students will be eligible for undergraduate degrees, said Kathy Munn, assistant registrar. About 270 other students will qualify for master's or educational specialist degrees, and there are about 170 doctoral degree candidates.

Purdue President Steven C. Beering will be the commencement speaker. Purdue Alumni Association President Thomas J. Carroll, Carmel, also will address the new graduates during the ceremonies. Jeffrey M. Karns, Greenwood, will give the student response. He will earn a bachelor's degree from the School of Science.

Music for the ceremony will be presented by the Purdue Commencement Band and the PMO Singers.

This will be the 178th commencement ceremony at Purdue. The university has been recognizing summer graduates at the West Lafayette campus every year since 1984.
