July 18-21: Top farmer crop workshop

The 32nd annual workshop, to be held in Stewart Center at Purdue, will include presentations by leading farmers, industry experts, university researchers and Extension specialists about the latest developments in crop farming technology and management. The workshop also offers farmers an opportunity to learn linear programming software to analyze the economics of their current cropping operations and to evaluate proposed changes. Preregistration is required; the fee is $199 for the first enrollee from a particular farm and $75 for each additional person from that farm. July 20: In-Field crop and diagnostic training

The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field clinics throughout the summer to improve farmers' trouble-shooting skills. Hands-on sessions will focus on identifying, diagnosing and correcting insect, weed, disease, fertilizer and cultural problems associated with corn, soybeans, wheat and other forage crops. Registration is $90, and registration materials are available at the Extension office in each county. The next session will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 20 at the Purdue Agronomy Research Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W. July 21-23: American Society of animal sciences meeting

Purdue animal scientists are sharing their research at the annual meeting of the American Society of Animal Sciences at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Creating leaner bacon and reducing manure odor by changing the hogs' diet are among the more than two dozen projects that Purdue researchers will present during the three-day event. July 24: Garden day

This event, free and open to the public, will include tours of the Horticulture gardens and greenhouses, plus lectures and demonstrations about plant propagation, plant diseases, and "gourmet gardening." Garden Day will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in and around the Horticulture Building, which is on Marsteller Street between Harrison and Wood streets. July 27: Midwest regional turf field day

Professional turf managers from golf courses, lawn care and sod production businesses, athletic fields, or parks and recreation departments can learn about the latest turfgrass research at this event. The field day, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Research Center on the north edge of Purdue's campus, will include a trade show, equipment demonstrations, three research tours and a symposium on gray leaf spot. Registration the day of the event is $25 for Midwest Turf Foundation members and $30 for nonmembers. Aug. 7-14: State Fair Leadership Conference

Six representatives from each county will be able to attend the Indiana State Fair's Youth Leadership Conference. The program, held at the Indiana School for the Deaf, promotes personal growth and development of leadership skills. Through participation and discussions in group leadership activities, community service orientations, cookouts and athletic events, the program provides new insight into government culture, human relations and teamwork. Applicants are not required to be 4-H club members; conference attendees are chosen by committees of community leaders cooperating with the Extension educators in each county. Aug. 9-11: Information agriculture conference

The InfoAg Conference in Stewart Center will focus on site-specific crop and soil management, as well as computer communication systems for agriculture. Participants include fertilizer dealers, farmers, Natural Resources Conservation Service specialists, and others from education and agribusiness. Registration is $450. Aug. 11-22: Indiana State Fair

Exhibits by Purdue's Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine will show how agriculture and Purdue research can affect your life. "Turf Management," "Safe Water for the Future," "Food Safety," "Gypsy Moths Threaten Indiana Trees" and "Who Gets Grandma's Pie Plate" are just a few of the exhibits fairgoers will be able to enjoy in the Our Land Pavilion. New to the exhibit will be touch-screen computers that allow participants to view statistical information about their county. Special events will include concerts, midway rides, daily parades, 4-H exhibits and pony rides. Tickets are $5 at the gate or $4 in advance at Marsh Supermarkets, CVS/pharmacies, Indiana Farm Bureau offices, Union Federal Savings Banks, Signature Inn and the Indiana State Fair Box Office. Children ages 4 and under are free. The fairgrounds are on 38th Street in Indianapolis, off I-65.
