July 6-7: Indiana farm management tour The 67th Annual Indiana Farm Management Tour includes visits to five farms in Posey, Vanderburgh and Gibson counties in southwestern Indiana. During each farm visit, participants can interview family members about the farming operations, hear experts describe various aspects of farm production and management, and take a walking tour. Tuesday night the tour goes to the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center for a panel discussion on "Changes in a Community When a Toyota-Type Plant Is Built." Purdue agricultural economist Chris Hurt will talk about the price outlook for agricultural commodities during Wednesday's lunch at Haubstadt Community Park. The two-day event is free, but those who plan to attend should contact the Cooperative Extension Service in one of the host counties. July 13: Purdue weed day (Date changed from June 29.) This free event from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Purdue Agronomy Research Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W., will include seminars on weed control, weed management and herbicide-tolerant crops. July 13 and 20: In-field crop and diagnostic training The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field clinics throughout the summer to improve farmers' trouble-shooting skills. Hands-on sessions will focus on identifying, diagnosing and correcting insect, weed, disease, fertilizer and cultural problems associated with corn, soybeans, wheat and other forage crops. Registration is $90, and registration materials are available at the Extension office in each county. The next sessions will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 13 and July 20 at the Purdue Agronomy Research Center, 4540 U.S. 52 W. July 18-21: Top farmer crop workshop The 32nd annual workshop, to be held in Stewart Center at Purdue, will include presentations by leading farmers, industry experts, university researchers and Extension specialists about the latest developments in crop farming technology and management. Preregistration is required; the fee is $199 for the first enrollee from a particular farm and $75 for each additional person from that farm. July 27: Midwest regional turf field day Professional turf managers from golf courses, lawn care and sod production businesses, athletic fields, or parks and recreation departments can learn about the latest turfgrass research at this field day, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the W.H. Daniel Turfgrass Research Center . The event will include a trade show, equipment demonstrations, three research tours and a symposium on gray leaf spot. Registration is due by July 16 and costs $20 for Midwest Turf Foundation members and $25 for nonmembers. A $5 charge will be added for those who register on site. Aug. 7-14: State fair youth leadership conference Six representatives from each county will be able to attend the Indiana State Fair's Youth Leadership Conference. The program, held at the Indiana School for the Deaf, promotes personal growth and development of leadership skills. Through participation and discussions in group leadership activities, community service orientations, cookouts and athletic events, the program provides new insight into government culture, human relations and teamwork. Applicants are not required to be 4-H club members; conference attendees are chosen by committees of community leaders cooperating with the Extension educators in each county. Aug. 9-11: Information agriculture conference The InfoAg Conference in Stewart Center will focus on site-specific crop and soil management, as well as computer communication systems for agriculture. Participants include fertilizer dealers, farmers, Natural Resources Conservation Service specialists, and others from education and agribusiness. Registration is $350 before July 10 and $450 thereafter. More information is available at the Indiana Ag99 Conference Web site. Aug. 11-22: Indiana state fair Exhibits by Purdue's Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine will show how agriculture and Purdue research can affect your life. "Turf Management," "Safe Water for the Future," "Food Safety," "Gypsy Moths Threaten Indiana Trees" and "Who Gets Grandma's Pie Plate" are just a few of the exhibits fairgoers will be able to enjoy in the Our Land Pavilion. New to the exhibit will be touch-screen computers that allow participants to view statistical information about their county. Special events will include concerts, midway rides, daily parades, 4-H exhibits and pony rides. Tickets are $5 at the gate or $4 in advance at Marsh Supermarkets, CVS/pharmacies, Indiana Farm Bureau offices, Union Federal Savings Banks, Signature Inn and the Indiana State Fair Box Office. Children ages 4 and under are free. The fairgrounds are on 38th Street in Indianapolis, off I-65.
