Police suggest traffic, parking options for July Fourth

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University and West Lafayette police have developed traffic plans for easing travel to and from Greater Lafayette's July Fourth celebration at Purdue University on Sunday (7/4), given the extensive road construction under way in West Lafayette.

"Our suggested routes will assist in the smoothest possible traffic flow and help people arrive on time and safely at the Stars and Stripes concert and fireworks display Sunday evening," said Purdue Deputy Chief James E. Roush.

The traffic plan aims to minimize traffic in the West Lafayette Levee area, where construction is causing delays.

Capt. John T. Walker of the West Lafayette Police Department said motorists should use main thoroughfares such as Sagamore Parkway (U.S. 52 bypass) to Northwestern Avenue, the Harrison Bridge to Northwestern Avenue, and State Street and River Road before and after the festivities.

"Using side streets will only delay your efforts," he said.

Roush said motorists are encouraged to use campus parking garages and the parking lot north of Ross-Ade Stadium, along with other lots in the athletic complex area. As those lots fill up, traffic will be directed to other campus lots and the intramural fields near the Purdue Airport. Motorists arriving from west of campus are encouraged to use the intramural lots.

Roush said Lafayette, Tippecanoe County and Indiana State police departments will cooperate with Purdue and West Lafayette police after the concert and fireworks to expedite outbound traffic.

"Please be patient and follow officers' directions so we can get you off campus as quickly as possible," Roush said.

The "Stars and Stripes" event, which has been held at Purdue's Slayer Center of Performing Arts since 1990, will begin at 6:15 p.m. Sunday with the Purdue Jazz Band. The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and other featured acts will take the stage at 7:15 p.m. The fireworks will begin at about 9:30 p.m. Rain date is Monday, July 5.

Roush noted that alcohol, fireworks and pets are prohibited at the celebration.
