Robbers take wallet near Purdue Bell Tower

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Two men robbed a Purdue University graduate student as he was walking at 12:55 a.m. today (Saturday, 6/12) near the Bell Tower on campus .

Two males, ages 18 to 25, first told the victim, Zhiwei Tong, 33, to hand over his book bag and then demanded his wallet, said Purdue police Lt. Max Wise. Tong then asked for and was given back his book bag. As the robbers ran southeast, a third male came along, gave them what appeared to be hand signals and then also took off running.

The victim told police that both of the robbers were black males and had a thin build. One was about 6' 1" and was wearing a white warm-up jacket and black shorts. The other was 6'3" and was wearing a black jacket and shorts. The third man was a white male who appeared to be about the same age. He had a big build and stood about 6'2" to 6'3". He had on long black pants and a blue or black bandanna on his head.

The graduate student was not injured. The robbery was witnessed by other people in the area.
