June 8-11: Home and family conference More than 700 homemakers and others are expected to attend the 1999 Home and Family Conference at Stewart Center and the Purdue Memorial Union, sponsored by Purdue Extension's Consumer and Family Sciences program. The keynote address will be delivered by Michelle Passoff, author of "LIGHTEN UP! Free Yourself from Clutter." Other activities include seminars on personal finances, child development, gourmet gardening and an introduction to the Internet. The conference is open to the public, and registration is $35 for the whole conference or $25 per day. Housing is available, and early registration is encouraged. June 8, 15, 18 and 22: In-field crop and diagnostic training The Purdue Cooperative Extension Service is presenting a series of in-field diagnostic training clinics throughout the summer to improve farmers' trouble-shooting skills. Hands-on experience at the one-day sessions will focus on identifying, diagnosing and correcting problems associated with corn, soybeans, wheat and other forage crops. Participants will look at problems from the standpoint of fertility, growth and development, as well as disease, insect and weed control. Registration is $90 for the day, which will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. Registration materials are available at the Extension office in each Indiana county. June 9-11: 4-H science workshops 4-H members in grades 9-12 can participate in one of the seven science workshops sponsored by Purdue. Workshop topics are food, aerospace, animal, plant, mechanical, computer science and ambassador. Each workshop on the West Lafayette campus will include hands-on activities and guest speakers. June 9-11: Rural health conference The Indiana Rural Health Association's annual conference will be at French Lick Springs Resort in French Lick, Ind. The association seeks to bring about changes in private and public policies to ensure that rural Hoosiers have access to quality health care in their own communities. The conference, "Rural Health Into the 21st Century," includes four concurrent sessions on public health, behavioral health, rural safety and health, and telehealth. The telehealth session will examine rural outreach, state and federal policy and Internet access. Also scheduled are several keynote addresses, a wine and dessert reception, an awards dinner, business meetings and a Monte Carlo Night. The registration cost is $125 for non-IRHA members and $100 for members. All functions and meals are included in the price. June 21-23: Indiana State 4-H round-up The round-up gives 4-H members from ages 12 to 14 a chance to learn about college life and career possibilities and an opportunity to develop role model and leadership skills. The cast from "Up With People" will perform to educate the youths about the importance of diversity and understanding other cultures. Multiple perspectives will be given on problem solving, leadership and relationship building. Other events will include 4-H exhibits, performances by the 4-H band and chorus, and recreation. June 24: Purdue Hay Day Educational seminars, equipment demonstrations by 14 different companies, hay demonstrations and a hay quality contest comprise Purdue University's annual Hay Day at the Feldun Purdue Agricultural Center west of Bedford, Ind. The one-day free event, sponsored by Purdue Extension and the Indiana Forage Council, will include seminars on reducing the risk of rain-damaged hay and losses from the potato leafhopper. Fourteen companies will demonstrate equipment in the afternoon. Farmers also can participate in a hay quality contest by entering an unbroken bale of hay. July 6-7: Indiana farm management tour Farmers and all interested in farming are encouraged to attend this year's 67th Annual Indiana Farm Management Tour. The tour involves visits to five different farms in three southwestern Indiana counties -- Posey, Vanderburgh, and Gibson. Activities on each farm include interviews of family members about the farming operation and how it is managed, presentations by experts on various aspects of farm production and management, and a walking tour to see features that include grain handling systems and a dairy milking parlor. The tour also includes visits to the Vanderburgh County 4-H center for a panel discussion entitled, "Changes in a Community when a Toyota-type Plant is Built," presented by John Huie, a Purdue agricultural economist. Purdue agricultural economist Chris Hurt will talk about the price outlook for agricultural commodities during lunch at Haubstadt Community Park. The two-day event is free; pre-registration is not required. Persons interested in attending are encouraged to contact the Cooperative Extension Service in one of the host counties. July 18-21: Top farmer crop workshop The 32nd annual workshop, held at Purdue University, includes presentations by leading farmers, industry experts, university researchers and extension specialists. Each speaker explores the latest developments in crop farming technology and management. The workshop also offers the opportunity for farmers to learn linear programming software to analyze the economics of their current cropping operations and to evaluate proposed changes in those operations. The workshop is being held in Stewart Center and preregistration is required. The registration fee is $199 for the first enrollee from a particular farm and $75 for each additional person attending from that farm.
