Theatre announces 1999-2000 Mainstage Season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Tickets are on sale for the 1999-2000 Purdue University Theatre Mainstage Season, which promises to entertain and inform with a diverse selection of plays.

The season opens with William Saroyan's 1940 Pulitzer Prize-winner, "The Time of Your Life." This series of surreal vignettes illuminates the destiny we carry as we affect people we meet throughout our lives. "The Time of Your Life" is a compelling snapshot of 1939 America that is, in many ways, prophetic. Directed by Dale Miller, professor of visual and performing arts and interim chairman of the Theatre Division, "The Time of Your Life" will play on The Experimental Theatre Stage from Sept. 23 through Oct. 3.

Next, playwright Sarah Daniel's 1989 play "The Gut Girls" will be presented in The Experimental Theatre Nov. 11-21. Victorian notions of femininity, the cost and subsequent value of self-worth and self-determination, are examined as upper and lower class English women come together and struggle to define their roles in society. "The Gut Girls" will be directed by Kristine Holtvedt, associate professor of visual and performing arts.

The Bard returns to the Loeb Playhouse in February as Purdue Theatre stages "The Comedy of Errors." This farcical play, one of Shakespeare's earlier works, revolves around the notion of mistaken identity. Performances will be the weekends of Feb. 18-20 and Feb. 24-26.

The Mainstage Season concludes with Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia." This 1993 award-winning play on gothic themes investigates the nature of truth and time, and the difference between the Classical and Romantic temperament. A theatrical piece that melds topics ranging from quantum physics to gardening, "Arcadia" will play on The Experimental Theatre Stage April 13-22.

Season ticket subscriptions are $22 for students and senior citizens, $34 for all others. Season subscribers receive tickets to all four mainstage shows for the price of three shows, if purchased separately. Tickets may be purchased at Loeb Box Office in Stewart Center, or by calling (765) 494-3933. Out-of-town subscribers may call toll-free, 800-914-SHOW.
