4-H Round-Up offers diversity and friendship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- This summer, a thousand Indiana teen-agers will be able to experience different cultures without leaving the country.

The 80th annual 4-H Round-Up June 21-23 at Purdue University will focus on cultural understanding and global awareness. The event allows the 4-H members to experience college life on a Big Ten campus while gaining additional knowledge of international cultures.

"Up With People," an energetic music and dance group with members from more than 20 countries, will help promote the idea of global awareness. Known worldwide, the group performs volunteer work, provides role models, and leads other young people to a greater cultural understanding. "Up With People" also will conduct multicultural workshops, an international festival, international games, and a special show entitled "ROADS" to help convey its message.

"This sensational international group has demonstrated all over the world that multiple perspectives can enrich our approaches to problem-solving, to leadership, to conflict resolution, and to relationship building," said Round-Up coordinator Pamala Morris, a Purdue Extension specialist for cross-cultural education. "The enthusiasm of 'Up With People,' through song and dance, will convey togetherness and a spirit of international harmony that transcends borders of any description."

In addition, 4-H Round-Up will continue to provide youths with an enriching experience and skills needed to face the challenges of a new millennium by teaching them more about career options, college life and leadership.

"The various workshops and events at this year's Round-Up will help youths by preparing them to live and work in a global environment," Morris said. "They also need to understand what is occurring in other parts of the world as citizens living and working in the United States."

Other events scheduled include a 4-H band jamboree and chorus, scavenger hunts, chemistry and physics fun fests, career exploration workshops and a recreational dance.
