Purdue students receive scholarships, honors

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University students recently were recognized for their achievements.

-- The Department of Computer Sciences has presented scholarships to four incoming freshmen for the 1999-2000 school year. Christopher Schneider, Munster, Ind . received the Undergraduate Scholarship, a four-year scholarship that funds full tuition and fees. Pedro Morales, San Juan, Puerto Rico, was awarded the $2,000 Young Scientist Award. Amar Kumar, Carmel, Ind. , received the Saul Rosen Scholarship, which provides $10,000 over four years to an Indiana resident majoring in computer science. Aaron Corcoran, South Bend, Ind. , was awarded the $500 Dodson Scholarship. Also, four Hoosier freshmen in the department received $1,000 Corporate Partners Council merit scholarships. They are Timothy Butler of Delphi, Michael Campbell of Mishawaka, Kristopher Kurtis of South Bend and David Wessel of Kokomo.

-- Erin Taylor, a sophomore from Lafayette who is majoring in child development and family studies, was nominated for the 1999 Richard J. Wood Award. Taylor is described by Purdue President Steven Beering as "radiating such joy and enthusiasm in helping people that you immediately sense that, for her, service is a lifetime commitment." The award is given annually by the Indiana Campus Compact to recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to community service during their college experience.

-- Michael Heimlich, a junior majoring in math and statistics from Reynolds, Ind. , received the V.L. Anderson Scholarship Award. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student who shows promise of contributing to statistics and its applications.

-- Two juniors majoring in industrial engineering, Jason Stach of Carmel, Ind. , and R. Michael Schmeiser of West Lafayette , received $5,000 Robert E. Savage Scholarships. The awards are presented annually to students in the School of Industrial Engineering who demonstrate high academic achievement and possess characteristics which indicate that they will successfully apply their skills to the future benefit of society.
