Phi Delta Theta disciplined for alcohol violations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Members of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Purdue have been disciplined after repeatedly violating university alcohol regulations.

The Office of the Dean of Students sanctioned the fraternity after determining that members threw beer bottles off a third-floor balcony of the house at 503 W. State St. on March 26.

These acts violate university regulations prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages or display of alcoholic beverage containers outside fraternity housing. The broken glass also created a public hazard on the surrounding sidewalk and a poor public image for the fraternity and community.

In a letter to fraternity officers and alumni representatives, Andrew Robison, assistant dean of students, imposed punitive and educational sanctions on the organization. Phi Delta Theta will be required to restrict access to the balconies and limit the number of social events held at the house during the next school year. The organization also must schedule an educational or philanthropic event for each social activity. The fraternity also must be alcohol-free by July 1, 2000, in accordance with national Phi Delta Theta regulations.

The fraternity had been given repeated oral and written warnings over the previous 18 months for such behavior, Robison said.
