Purdue trustees review budget, set student fees

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's Board of Trustees today (Friday 5/21) approved a $124 annual basic fee increase for Indiana residents taking classes at Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

The 3.5 percent increase means in-state students will pay $3,624 in basic fees for the academic year that begins in August. Those from out of state will pay $12,248, a 4.5 percent increase. Most students also will pay a $100 technology fee, an increase of $36. Engineering students will pay an additional $400 differential fee.

The trustees gave final approval to the new student fee schedule and endorsed a $608.9 million general fund budget plan for the Purdue system. The board will take final action on the 1999-2000 budget at its next meeting, July 9.

"Under the new fee structure, Indiana residents will continue to pay substantially less to attend Purdue than they would pay as resident students at seven other Big 10 public institutions," said Kenneth P. Burns, executive vice president and treasurer. "Only Wisconsin and Iowa will have lower in-state fees than Purdue. Purdue's academic excellence is a true bargain for our students."

Purdue President Steven C. Beering said he was pleased with the state's support.

"Our state lawmakers this year increased their investment in higher education for the next biennium, and for that we are grateful," Beering said. "They also contributed funds to help Purdue keep up with the demands of new technology, to ensure that our students learn on the systems and equipment they will find in the workplace. Our $100 technology fee is the student's portion of that investment. It's a shared responsibility."

At the regional Purdue campuses, student fees are based on the number of credit hours that are taken. The fees per credit hour will be:

  • Purdue Calumet and Purdue North Central -- basic fee, $97.55, up $3.30; technology fee, $4.45, up 15 cents.

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne -- basic fee, $106.30, up $4.80; technology fee, $4.50, up 20 cents.

  • Statewide Technology -- basic fee, $96.95, up $3.30.

Money from the state legislature and student fees make up almost all of Purdue's general fund budget.

Purdue's West Lafayette general fund budget, which was $448 million in 1998-99, is expected to total $477.5 million for 1999-2000. The general fund budget for the entire Purdue system, now $572 million, is expected to increase to $608.9 million.

Purdue's overall operating budget is made up of the general fund budget; federal and industrial research grants; gifts; student aid; and income from self-supporting auxiliary enterprises such as housing and food services, intercollegiate athletics and other service enterprises.
